Summary

The Cattle and Beef Trade Monitoring data enables MLA to capture market intelligence from major cities in Indonesia. The data collection since 2015 provided good historical data on the market situation impacted by various conditions, price fluctuation, and local supply of cattle and beef. The monthly wet market and retail data are collected and provided to the MLA Market Analyst team to feed into the broader trade data.

Objectives

  • To enable well-informed and substantiated market insights for stakeholders, this project will capture comprehensive data of cattle and beef prices, customer profiles, consumption trends, information around impact of Indian buffalo meat against, Australian beef (both hot (fresh) meat and boxed beef) in wet markets and the movement of local cattle from producer areas to consumer areas.
  • This data can be used to better understand the market and its relationship with industry.
  • It will target MLA’s market access strategy, with information being shared with Indonesian stakeholders and officials, which will assist in determining how their resources can be best utilised.

Key findings

The markets have been subdued in Q1-3, however it has picked up in Q4 with the increase in feeder sales, slaughter numbers and beef demand. The beef prices remain stable throughout the year, despite the feeder price being down.

Benefits to industry

Stakeholders will be able to use the information to better assist strategic decision making:

  • Development of evidence-based risk analysis (biosecurity risk perspective).
  • Further assessment of impact to trade – competitiveness, socio-economic, welfare
    aspects.
  • Targeted biosecurity/border control activities by quarantine agency.
  • Targeted market intelligence activities to monitor the impact of Indian buffalo meat.

MLA action

Provide the insights and data collected to the Market Analyst team and other stakeholders that might benefit from the information.
