Wednesday daily sheep summary

Lamb consignments at Forbes decreased by 58%, to 13,620 head, due to widespread rain in the supply region. Lamb quality was similar to that of the previous sale with a good selection of finished lambs and plainer types on offer. Heavy and extra heavy weight lambs were well represented. All the usual buyers were present and competing in a dearer market.

Mutton throughput decreased 44%, to 1,808 head. Quality was mixed and prices were fair, with Merinos comprising most of the market.

  • Light weight 2 score old Merino lambs averaged 595¢, up 59¢/kg cwt.
  • Trade weight 4 score old lambs to processors gained 21¢, averaging 655¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy weight 4 score old lambs to processors averaged 668¢, up 69¢/kg cwt  
  • Extra heavy weight 4 score old lambs were up 47¢, averaging 663¢/kg cwt
  • Medium weight 3 score Merino ewes eased 1¢, averaging 420¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy weight 3 score first-cross ewes averaged 428¢/kg cwt

Lamb numbers at Ballarat decreased 39%, to 13,441 head. Due to cold and wet weather, quality was average with heavier lambs in short supply. The usual buying group was present, with feeders and restockers active.

Mutton consignments declined 25%, to 4,275 head. All weights and grades were on offer and attracted strong demand.

  • Light weight 2 score old Merino lambs were firm, averaging 546¢/kg cwt
  • Light weight 2 score old lambs to restockers and processors averaged 595¢ and 609¢, down 18¢ and 10¢/kg cwt, respectively
  • Trade weight 3 score old lambs to processors gained 8¢, averaging 637¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy weight 4 score old lambs to processors averaged 671¢, up 23¢/kg cwt
  • Medium weight 3 score Merino ewes and wethers eased 3¢ and 20¢, averaging 419¢ and 407¢/kg cwt, respectively  

At the close of Tuesday’s markets:

  • The eastern states restocker lamb indicator averaged 612¢/kg cwt, down 1¢ from where it finished the previous day
  • Merino lambs were up 5¢, on 560¢/kg cwt
  • Light lambs were up 2¢, to 591¢/kg cwt
  • Trade lambs were up 1¢, to 610¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy lambs were up 5¢, on 619¢/kg cwt
  • The mutton indicator remained firm, on 401¢/kg cwt
