Thursday daily sheep summary

Lamb throughput at CTLX increased 7%, to 7,800 head. Quality remained fair this week, with a notable selection of trade and heavy weight drafts penned. Heavy weight presence eased on last weeks sale however, with lighter sections to processors settling dearer overall.

Mutton numbers declined 63%, to 1,900 head. A plainer trend underlined the sale, with lighter weight sheep categories holding firm week-on-week.

  • Light weight 2 score old lambs to processors were up 68¢, on 596¢/kg cwt
  • Trade weight 3 score old lambs to slaughter jumped 28¢, to 596¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy weight 4 score old lambs averaged 601¢, gaining 40¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy weight 4 score first-cross ewes jumped 32¢, to 332¢/kg cwt

Consignments at Hamilton declined 16%, to 5,884 head. Quality ranged from fair to very good across all categories this week, with the usual collection of buyers bidding commendably throughout the sale. The market trended dearer overall, with trade weights and unfinished types well supplied.

Mutton throughput decreased 8%, to 4,818 head. All weights and grades were on offer, with good drafts of crossbred ewes, along with Merino lines well represented.

  • Light weight 2 score old lambs were up 27¢, averaging 614¢/kg cwt
  • Trade weight 3 score old lambs jumped 28¢, averaging 597¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy weight 3 score old lambs averaged 596¢/kg cwt
  • Medium weight 2 score first-cross ewes gained 25¢, on 364¢/kg cwt   

At the close of Wednesday’s markets:

  • The eastern states restocker lamb indicator decreased 10¢ on where it finished the previous day, on 574¢/kg cwt
  • Merino lambs were up 2¢, at 523¢/kg cwt
  • Light lambs were up 10¢, at 525¢/kg cwt
  • Trade lambs were up 8¢, on 575¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy lambs were up 5¢, on 580¢/kg cwt
  • The mutton indicator settled firm on 366¢/kg cwt
