Friday daily cattle summary

Roma Prime cattle throughput decreased 60% this week, yarding 489 head. Bullocks and grown steers were well represented, with quality mixed and a cheaper trend underlining the sale.

  • Heavy C4 grown steers to processors were 7¢ lower, averaging 270¢/kg
  • Heavy D4 grown heifers to slaughter averaged 252¢, back 2¢/kg
  • Heavy D5 cows to the same orders eased 6¢, averaging 213¢/kg

Consignments at Dubbo decreased 17%, to 4,375 head. Prime cattle were limited this week, with the dry conditions continuing to have an effect on quality. Plainer lines were seen across all sections, with young trade cattle trending cheaper.

  • Light C2 vealer steers to restockers eased 12¢, averaging 298¢/kg
  • Medium C2 yearling steers to feed were 4¢ lower, averaging 291¢/kg
  • Heavy C4 grown steers to processors averaged 278¢, back 14¢/kg
  • Heavy D4 cows to slaughter were back 16¢, averaging 200¢/kg

Bairnsdale cattle numbers declined 28%, to 864 head. The usual buying group were present and active, with quality declining as a result of many lacking weight and finish. The market held firm to cheaper in places, with lighter trade yearlings easing week-on-week.

  • Heavy D3 yearling heifers to processors held firm, averaging 278¢/kg
  • Heavy D3 grown steers to slaughter were back 4¢, averaging 285¢/kg
  • Heavy D4 cows to the same orders eased 5¢, averaging 221¢/kg

At the close of Thursday’s markets:                                                                           

  • The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) finished on 555.25¢, declining 1.50¢/kg cwt on where it finished the previous day
  • Trade steers were back 7¢, to 297¢/kg lwt
  • Medium steers were steady, on 286¢/kg lwt
  • Heavy steers were back 5¢, at 277¢/kg lwt
  • Medium cows were back 4¢, on 194¢/kg lwt
  • Feeder steers were back 1¢, on 299¢/kg lwt
