Friday daily cattle summary

Roma Prime throughput increased 21% this week, to 487 head. With only a small number yarded, quality was fair to good. All of the usual processor buyers were in operation, with those to export more selective on bull lines in particular.

  • Heavy C4 grown steers to slaughter averaged 270¢, up 6¢/kg
  • Light D3 grown heifers to processors were 12¢ dearer, averaging 233¢/kg
  • Medium D3 cows to the same orders averaged 207¢, up 9¢/kg

Throughput at Dubbo decreased 16%, to 2,450 head. Quality was good throughout the yarding, with prime cattle well supplied across all sections. Not all the regular buyers were in attendance, with the absence of one major exporter from the south.

  • Light C2 vealer steers to restockers averaged 322¢, back 2¢/kg
  • Medium C2 yearling steers to feed were 10¢ dearer, averaging 323¢/kg
  • Heavy C4 grown steers to slaughter were up 7¢, averaging 292¢/kg
  • Heavy D4 cows to processor orders averaged 212¢, back 1¢/kg

Bairnsdale consignments declined 9%, to 1,067 head. Export categories dominated the yarding, with the usual buying group present and active in a firmer market. Quality was mixed, with grown cattle well supplied, while younger lines generally lacked finish resulting in a mixed trend.

  • Heavy D3 yearling heifers to slaughter were 3¢ dearer, averaging 280¢/kg
  • Heavy C3 grown steers to processors averaged 296¢, up 3¢/kg
  • Heavy D3 bullocks to slaughter were 1¢ dearer, averaging 289¢/kg
  • Heavy D2 cows to the same orders averaged 208¢, back 5¢/kg

At the close of Thursday’s markets:                                                                           

  • The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) averaged 570¢, up 3¢/kg cwt on where it finished the previous day
  • Trade steers were up 1¢, on 310¢/kg lwt
  • Medium steers were back 1¢, on 271¢/kg lwt
  • Heavy steers were up 1¢, on 281¢/kg lwt
  • Medium cows held firm, on 202¢/kg lwt
  • Feeder steers were up 2¢, at 310¢/kg lwt
