For the last three months, prices for all steer indicators – the Restocker Steer Indicator, Feeder Steer Indicator and Heavy Steer Indicator – have been operating along the lines of long-term market trends, remaining relatively flat in comparison to the volatility seen over the last three years.

The cattle market was varied this week. Cattle yardings eased 15,960 head to 49,145, with Queensland the only state to see a significant lift in yarding to 18,593 head.

Australian beef producers have indicated growing optimism in the Australian beef industry according to the latest Beef Producer Intentions Survey (BPIS). The survey, run three times a year by Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA), has reported that one in two producers saw a positive outlook, resulting in a nett positive sentiment increase of 11% to 34% compared to the last survey in November 2023.

Australian lamb slaughter reached a new peak last week, with the National Livestock Reporting Service (NLRS) slaughter report recording over 510,000 head. This figure is in line with the high production we’ve seen over the past few years; 2023 saw the largest lamb production volume on record, and Australian sheepmeat made up half of all exports.
