The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) has softened 18.34c from Friday last week, with nearly 7,000 less head reporting to 1,090c/kg – down 8% since the highs of early January. This could be an indication of easing restocker demand and is the lowest the EYCI has been since November last year, when it was operating at 1,099.9c/kg cwt. Feeders now make up 60% of buyers for EYCI-eligible cattle.

The price premium between the Restocker Yearling Steer Indicator and Restocker Yearling Hefier Indicator has been well established and is well known. This premium mimics the naturally occurring cattle cycle and is a strong indicator of confidence in the market and potential restocker demand.

This week, yardings came back 33% for cattle and 10% for lambs. Getting stock to sales is becoming more difficult due to flooded roads, so producers are prioritising moving stock to high ground or preferencing direct sales from the paddock.

The cattle market has eased across all indicators. Yardings have eased by 3,898 to 75,856 head. Yardings eased in a majority of states except Tasmania and Victoria. Yardings are 30,758 head above the national average for the last five weeks.
