The cattle market has experienced a downturn across all indicators. Cattle yardings have decreased by 20,001 to 67,332 head, marking a 30% increase compared to figures from 2023. Notably, there has been a 40% increase in week-on-week yardings compared to 2023.

For the first time since 2016, mutton prices have dropped below $3/kg carcase weight, currently down 98c since the start of the year – a fall of 25%. In contrast, the Trade Lamb Indicator (TLI) has risen 4%, and the heavy lamb indicator is up 4.6% over the same time frame. Light lamb’s trajectory is following that of mutton – down 7%.

Cattle market prices were softer this week after a recovery in yardings from last week. Numbers in Queensland lifted by 3,598 head, with this increase largely being attributed to the Dalby sale which strengthened its yarding by 1,381 head week-on-week.
