The cattle market was varied this week. Cattle yardings eased 15,960 head to 49,145, with Queensland the only state to see a significant lift in yarding to 18,593 head.

Australian lamb slaughter reached a new peak last week, with the National Livestock Reporting Service (NLRS) slaughter report recording over 510,000 head. This figure is in line with the high production we’ve seen over the past few years; 2023 saw the largest lamb production volume on record, and Australian sheepmeat made up half of all exports.

The market generally moved sideways this week. Yardings dipped by 7,349 to 53,655 head, despite the longer trading week in some states after the King’s Birthday long weekend. This was mostly due to a 9,974 head drop in Queensland yardings to 15,465 head. Yardings were smaller in every Queensland sale except Dalby.

The cattle market has eased this week, with the exception of the Restocker Yearling Steer Indicator which lifted by 1¢. An easing in yardings by 8,859 to 50,100 head was due to public holidays in NSW and Victoria.

The cattle market has been generally positive barring the Restocker Yearling Steer Indicator. Yardings have eased by 21,142 head (a 30% reduction) to end the week at 49,996 head.
