Summary

The Australian red meat and livestock industry is seeking opportunities to promote Australia’s good land management practices and environmental sustainability to support engagement with customers, financial institutions, Government and international stakeholders. This is in response to an increasing number of Australian red meat customers (domestically and globally) aligning to and applying international definitions of ‘deforestation’ to Australian agricultural products. This project developed a definition for ‘deforestation’ in an Australian agricultural context, which is informing plans for adoption. In order to do this, a regulatory environment review was undertaken, and a draft definition developed and finalised following broad industry consultation. Further information on this project, the definition, and its adoption, is available from Cattle Australia.
