Summary
The Environmental Credentials for Grassfed Beef platform provides an accessible, low cost way for producers to demonstrate their on farm sustainable practices to end users in the supply chain i.e. processors, banks, retailers. this was developed in response to the continued demand for evidence of sustainable practices throughout the supply chain. The platform utilises the MLA Carbon Calculator, the Cibo Labs platform, self-assessment checklists and learning modules to cover the five key theme areas: ground cover, tree cover, drought resilience, biodiversity and carbon storage. The platform allows the users to progress through these learnings in a tired system to assess sustainability over time and meet the producer where they are in their sustainability journey.
Objectives
To provide a platform at a low/no cost to producers that allows them to share their sustainable practices on farm with end users in the supply chain.
Key findings
There is a growing need for a platform that can help demonstrate sustainable practices on-farm with the rest of the supply chain. This project has also highlighted the need to reduce data burdens on producers i.e. utilising one set of raw data for many reasons.
Benefits to industry
This platform allows for the easy sharing of sustainable practices and reporting and continued the learning of best practice.
MLA action
MLA is now using the launch of the platform as a way to plan for V2 improvements.
Future research
Learning modules will need to continue to be updated as new information comes out. Additional modules will also need to be added to encourage continued learning. Other platform and technology integration will also be needed to keep the platform relevant.
