Summary

A priority of Red Meat 2030 is to improve the economic resilience of the industry by increasing market access. Success encompasses reducing technical or non-tariff barriers (NTB) by $1billion AUD. MLA's contribution in FY24 included a significant role in assisting industry (particularly AMIC as the lead agency) with the ongoing alleviation of beef/sheepmeat/goatmeat NTBs.

This was an operational project which included the following activities:
- monitored import and food regulations to identify change and developing issues
- provided industry with regular communication on technical/NTB developments and formulated response plans
- utilisation of the NTB prioritisation (MAPT) tool to guide investment in alleviation of priority issues in conjunction with industry and government.

Objectives

MLA makes a significant contribution to alleviating priority NTBs (i.e. meat messaging for beef exports to the USA; chilled shelf-life harmonisation in the Middle East; global Halal positioning; preparation for improved China access), as well as developing/implementing second tier NTB alleviation plans as appropriate.
