G.MAE.2401 - Global Economic Access FY24

Summary

A priority of Red Meat 2030 is to improve the economic resilience of industry by increasing market access. Success encompasses securing/improving preferential access in the majority of red meat export markets. MLA's contribution to this success encompassed supporting industry and the Australian Government ('Government') to defend and maintain existing favourable access conditions and position Australian beef, sheepmeat and goatmeat for favourable outcomes in trade negotiations.

This project:
- assisted the Australian red meat industry to obtain maximum value from the network of existing Australian trade deals
- assisted in reducing economic barriers impacting Australia's red meat trade via positioning of priorities and delivery of targeted advocacy using plurilateral, bilateral, regional and/or sectoral fora
- prioritised effort in high value trade negotiations i.e. progressed Australia-European Union; Australia-India and Australia-UAE negotiations.

This was essentially an operational project which undertook the following activities:
- monitored market access and regulatory conditions in key international markets, and where adverse, worked closely with Government to avoid/rectify
- maintained a network of key Government and industry stakeholders (Australia and in-market) and worked alongside these contacts in seeking to secure favourable access conditions
- monitored trade reform developments, and provided industry with data/insights to inform/support policy, strategy and positioning
- prepared industry submissions and correspondence, securing industry endorsement of same, which in turn, were submitted to Government
- developed and implemented industry agreed advocacy plans (in Australia and in-market) to support industry's position in trade negotiations
- represented industry at international/domestic trade forums to advocate favourable access.

Objectives

Industry endorsed positions/submissions/advocacy strategies/correspondence prepared by and where appropriate, implemented by MLA on priority trade reform issues, are acknowledged and acted on by Government, and support delivery of import regime reform.
