Summary
Internal parasites are a major problem for goat producers in Australia and they are extremely limited in the number of approved pesticidal actives available to them. This project builds on the recent MLA project ‘Sustainable internal parasite control in goats’ and consults broadly with goat producers, vets/technical experts, product manufacturers/marketers and regulatory experts. This will provide a comprehensive evaluation of the current situation and offer a range of potential paths to increasing the diversity of available products an providing specific technical advice.
Objectives
This project builds on the recent MLA project ‘Sustainable internal parasite control in goats’, consults broadly with goat producers, vets/technical experts, product manufacturers/marketers and regulatory experts, to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the current situation and offer a range of potential paths to increasing the diversity of available products and providing specific technical advice.
Key findings
- Currently, there is a low value proposition for the development and registration of products for use in goats from pharmaceutical sector, compounded by regulatory constraints within the APVMA.
- Off-label use remains the most appropriate legal avenue for veterinarians and farmers to access chemical and non-chemical products for the goat industry.
- Contemporary data must be generated to better inform veterinarians and farmers of dose rates, efficacy and residues for current products used in the goat industry.
