Summary

Six new case studies were developed including two from each state (Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia). The new case studies reviewed weaning management in the north and identified participating extensive beef properties that are practicing best practice weaning management.

Objectives

- to provide six new high quality written case studies detailing best practice weaning management
- to support capacity building for junior extension staff
- to provide high quality data for incorporation (by MLA) into additional extension materials and MLA resources and integrate this into state extension programs.

Key findings

Six new case studies focusing on weaner management in northern beef herds have been delivered.

Benefits to industry

Fundamental content includes: whole of business summary (land types, location, enterprise type, target markets, overall herd structure and management), with a specific focus on weaning management; why wean, optimal time/age/ live weight to wean, general animal husbandry practices associated with weaning and suitable feed supplements.

MLA action

The six new weaner management case studies have been prepared and will be used in the revised northern weaner management manual.

Future research

Recommendations will be made for incorporation of these case studies in additional extension materials and resources.
