Summary
The National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) is Australia’s system for the identification and traceability of livestock. NLIS reflects Australia’s commitment to biosecurity and food safety and provides a competitive advantage in global markets. Under NLIS, livestock must be identified with NLIA approved identification technologies or device.
Objectives
The consultant is an expert in electronic testing and on provision of RFIDs (devices) by ISC, the consultant undertakes a suite of electronic testing of devices against the agreed Test Procedure including testing under different temperatures, X-rays and any other tests requested. The consultant analyses the results and provides a report to ISC on performance which is used to help determine eligibility for NLIS approval. On request of ISC, the consultant may enhancement the testing procedure, testing apparatus, or complete additional testing, including providing general ad hoc advice.
Benefits to industry
The benefit to industry is to provide assurance that only identification devices that meet the NLIS Standards for scanning/reading are approved for use in Australia and to verify the reliability of devices that are already NLIS accredited or investigate non-reading devices.
MLA action
MLA to put in place another project to continue the benchmark testing of both new and existing animal identification technologies containing devices to ensure they can adequately meet the required read ranges specified in the NLIS Approved Identification Technology (AIT) program requirements (formally the NLIS RFID standards).
Future research
Ongoing testing of RFID's (devices) for the purposes of the NLIS is required.
