Summary

This project assessed the information exchange related benefits and barriers associated with accessing, transferring, aggregating and using industry information so as to drive on farm and off-farm productivity within the red meat industry, including supply chain measurement. This project identified options for the delivery of an information exchange platform that addresses those barriers, including likely benefits, costs and potential business models, and clarified the role of MLA and associated entities such as NUS Ltd in the delivery of an information exchange platform for the red meat industry.

Objectives

The objective of this project was to draft business case for an information exchange platform which encompasses the needs of relevant stakeholders across the entire chain and considers all of the risks and rewards arising from such a platform. The draft business case addressed the needs of industry and form a basis for a strategy and investment plan to be formed that will have industry endorsement.

Benefits to industry

Improved leverage of data is an opportunity for the red meat industry to increase the value it generates along the supply chain. Speeding up the rate of data leverage will improve the industry’s global competitiveness. New benefits in the data age are increased connectivity between sectors with improved alignment to consumer demands. Opportunity exists for alignment of entire supply chains to remove waste and increase productivity according to consumer value rather than sector value at expense to other sectors and the consumer.
