Summary

This project commissioned a report to audit and evaluate the present state of knowledge in three areas of research and development deemed most important for productivity and profitability for northern breeding businesses: breeding herd management, feedbase management, and environmental sustainability. A fourth section 'pathways to practice' was also included. The report was commissioned to assist with planning of work and identification of gaps relevant to the NB2 strategic partnership.

Objectives

This project aimed to evaluate knowledge in northern breeding herd management, feedbase management, environmental sustainability and pathways to practice in order to inform research, development and adoption gaps to be addressed by the NB2 strategic partnership. The report found that the primary means of improving the productivity of northen beef breeding enterprises is successful adoption of scientific innovation, with adoption of existing knowledge the highest priority. Adoption should work within the current adoption structure at MLA. Another priority should be the lack of access to experienced, competent advisors.

Key findings

The report found that the primary means of improving the productivity of northen beef breeding enterprises is successful adoption of scientific innovation, with adoption of existing knowledge the highest priority. Adoption should work within the current adoption structure at MLA. Another priority should be the lack of access to experienced, competent advisors.

Benefits to industry

The northern Australian beef industry accounts for approximately 64% of Australia's national beef herd, generating income on land that cannot be used for other agricultural purposes. The industry faces significant challenges, and this report evaluate the present state of knowledge to inform the NB2 program.

MLA action

This report will inform priorities for future investment within the NB2 strategic partnership.

Future research

Several recommendations came from this report, including studies on the causes of calf and cow mortality and the linkages between risk, causation and death, strategies to promote the economic and environmental benefits of sustainable grazing management practices, further development of tools for remote sensing, promotion of P supplementation, and more research, development and adoption into genomic selection.
