L.SFP.1009 - Environmental Credentials for Grassfed Beef Codesign

The Environmental Credentials for Grassfed Beef platform was built with input from producers in a co-design process that enabled them to influence what the platform needed to include to maximise its value for their businesses.

Project start date: 17 August 2021
Project end date: 29 June 2024
Publication date: 03 May 2024
Project status: Completed
Livestock species: Grass-fed Cattle
Relevant regions: National

Summary

The Environmental Credentials for Beef project will enable grassfed beef producers to be recognized and rewarded for their environmental credentials. The Environmental Credentials project will develop a platform enabling producers to measure and voluntarily demonstrate their environmental credentials to markets. This project will design, implement and evaluate a co-design process for Environmental Credentials producer workshops. This project is a required deliverable on the Environmental Credentials grant agreement with the Federal government.

Objectives

1. Design and evaluate the co-design process for the Environmental Credentials for Australian
Beef (Smart Farms) project that has strong perceived credibility, legitimacy and relevance with grassfed beef producers and other stakeholders.
2. As required, support the environmental credentials platform developer in integrating the themes into the online platform.

Key findings

As a novel method for collaborating with beef producers, the co-design process has improved the design of the online platform by providing insight into what producers would like to see in order for the online platform to achieve the greatest value proposition for producers.

Benefits to industry

Customers and other industry stakeholders are increasingly looking for evidence of sustainable production practices. A challenge for beef producers is how to demonstrate their environmental performance and achieve recognition without common standards and reporting systems. To reduce fragmentation of market schemes and approaches, the overarching project, Environmental Credentials for Australian Beef (L.SFP.1000) will deliver a national, common platform that allows producers to assess their environmental performance and voluntarily demonstrate their environmental credentials to markets. The national
platform will ensure a single set of outcome-based standards, use remote data sources (e.g. satellite imagery) for verification of sustainability credentials (where possible) and provide a solution for producers wishing to demonstrate their environmental performance against five themes:
1. tree cover
2. ground cover
3. biodiversity stewardship
4. carbon balance
5. drought resilience.

MLA action

MLA will continue to maintain and enhance the usability and utility of the Environmental Credentials platform to demonstrate its value in enabling sharing of sustainability data through the supply chain.

Future research

As a novel method for collaborating with beef producers, the co-design process has improved the design of the online platform by providing insight into what producers would like to see in order for the online platform to achieve the greatest value proposition for producers.
