Summary
Mentoring activity that will run over 12 months to train livestock consultants to be able to deliver the Profitable Grazing System Supported Learning Package. Training provided for Building Better Breeders and basic skills in coaching based learning for producers.
Objectives
• mentor clarity and confidence in session delivery
• understanding of resources (workbooks, slides, graphs etc)
• comfort with the session plans and ability to bring expertise in
Key findings
Mentoring builds the practical skills of new deliverers in delivering SLPs for PGS.
Benefits to industry
The mentoring activity will result in one new trained deliverer for the Profitable Grazing Systems program, increasing capacity to deliver the supported learning packages to red meat producers. This mentoring program will provide PGS will with the third deliverer who can deliver the entire SLP independently.
Profitable Grazing Systems participating producers, on average receive a return of $17.47/ha due to the adoption of management practices.
MLA action
Recommendations for MLA are:
• A skills audit for deliverers (on practical skills in the course – condition scoring etc).
• A list of subject matter experts that can be called in to co-deliver where key deliver doesn’t have the level of ability.
• Some structure / check list to the mentor / mentee relationship. A great concept – but one that I think both David and I would have benefited more from if there was a little structure to follow.
Future research
Due to PGS being an adoption program which does not conduct research, no future research is required.
