The shelf-life achieved by the products in this trial exceed the 132 days shelf-life expectation for Australian lamb. Adoption of these new packing films will provide lamb meat producers with additional confidence to meet distant markets.

Summary

The shelf-life achieved beyond 132 days shelf-life expectation for Australian lamb. Adoption of these new packing films would provide lamb meat producers with additional confidence to meet distant markets.

Objectives

The objective of this project is to perform shelf-life testing of new packaging of important lamb products to verify that a shelf-life beyond 130 days is achievable. The new packaging will also allow product to be packed without the need for bone guard.

Key findings

Lamb products can achieve a shelf-life beyond 130 days. In addition, it does not need a bone guard.

Benefits to industry

This packaging can assist lamb products that exceed 130 days shelf life to last longer and reach markets which are currently out of reach. In addition, there is a reduction in 1 FTE due to the reduction in bone guard requirements.
