Goat industry data collation and tracking | 2023

Data collection and analysis for the Australian goatmeat industry underpins supply chain and market development, industry strategic planning, issues management, and the tracking and benchmarking of industry growth.

Summary

A critical requirement for a viable, long-term goat industry is accurate and reliable data on supply. This project will implement processes to improve, collate, track and report existing data. These processes will increase goat industry access to, and reliability of, data for supply and market forecasting. For regions important to the export industry, the project will quantify the number of goats managed, unmanaged and marketed annually. It will model population changes and the sustainability of supply under different harvesting rates. In summary, this project seeks to generate reliable information to improve industry’s ability to forecast supply.
This project’s outputs will underpin:
· confident supply-chain and market development
· improved industry strategic planning
· increased capacity to foresee supply issues
· tracking and benchmarking of the industry’s growth.

Objectives

1. Report to industry, information on managed and unmangaged goat suppliers. goat population estimates, goat supply, number of goats processed and their destination and trends over time.
2. Engagement of a stakeholder group to provide data and technical input.
3. Maintenance of the National Goatmeat Supply Forecasting Committee.
4. Population modelling to make informed recommendations regarding changes to industry practice.

Key findings

This project has been continued in a phase two project, B.GOA.0131.

Benefits to industry

This project provides the supply data that underpins a successful, long term goat industry in Australia. It provides confidence in supply-chain and market development, improved strategic planning, increased capacity to foresee supply issues and provides tracking and benchmarking of the industry's growth.

Future research

This project has been continued for an additional 3 years.
