Summary

This company managed activity (CMA) is an allocation to cover the costs associated with industry consultation. The formal consultation process includes: the annual survey of accredited feedlots, which prioritises and provides feedback on the proposed research and development (R&D) expenditure for the coming year; two workshops with the veterinarians, nutritionists, and environmental science service providers that consult to industry; and four to six consultations per year with the Australian Lot Feeders' Association (ALFA) R&D Committee.

Objectives

(1) Consult with the Australian Lot Feeders' Association on research and development priorities for the feedlot industry
(2) Consult with feedlot veterinarians and nutritionists on research and development priorities for the feedlot industry.

Key findings

Four consultations were held with the ALFA R&D committee during FY21. Two meetings were held with the ALFA/MLA Veterinarians and Nutritionist during FY21.

A range of research and development priorities were identified in the areas of antimicrobial stewardship, feedlot automation, methane suppressing feed additives, and feedlot training and leadership building.

Benefits to industry

By maintaining active consultation with ALFA and industry service providers a targeted research program can be developed to meet the industry's needs.

MLA action

Further consultation with the ALFA R&D committee and ALFA/MLA veterinarian and nutritionists meeting is planned for FY22.
