CMA: FY21 Feedlot Workshops

MLA works collaboratively with the Australian Lot Feeders' Association to deliver extension and adoption activities to the feedlot industry.

Summary

This project covers the costs of developing and producing workshop materials and conducting training workshops incorporating the outcomes of feedlot research activities to industry participants. These workshops are delivered in collaboration with the Australian Lot Feeders’ Association.

Key findings

Webinars were delivered across a range of key topics including:
1. Feedlot energy
- feed mill metering to identify opportunities
- boiler technologies to save energy feedlot energy.

2. Carbon neutrality
- introduction to MLA 'Moving towards carbon neutrality - opportunities for lot feeders manual'
- review of MLA funded research on 3-Nitroxyproponal (3-NOP) and its effects on feedlot methane production.

Benefits to industry

These workshops have highlighted modern technologies for adoption by Australian lot feeders including novel feed additives and feed milling technology.

MLA action

MLA is working with ALFA through a service level agreement in FY22 to further facilitate extension and adoption activities.

Future research

A workshop schedule has been planned and agreed with ALFA for the FY22 year including the following topics:
- feedlot automation (November 2021)
- transportation and lairage (February 2022)
- feedlot shade evaluation (June 2022).
