Summary

The consultant reported to the MLA program manager, Beef productivity – Producer Consultation and Adoption to support general activities as directed and to work directly with the Grassfed beef R&D program manager to review final reports as deemed necessary and related specifically to the program area, to support and provide scientific oversight to relevant PDS activities namely Easy P and Girl Power, support producer groups under NB2 as directed and to support delivery of the 2021–22 P challenge. A presentation on vaccination and pian relief was delivered at the Livestock Advisors workshop in Townsville. The early findings from the Girl Power PDS along with the logic behind improving the management of maiden heifers in northern Australia was presented at a Beef Up Forum at Blackall and suggestions have been provided on the penultimate copy of the P manual.

Objectives

The objectives of this project were to have the consultant work with the program manager – grassfed beef productivity to review documents and support research and adoption activities.

Key findings

1. The consultant provided technical and editorial review of documents for publication.
2. Co-ordinate and deliver activities supporting NB2 producer group/s where no appropriate co-ordinator with skills or experience could be identified.
3. Co-ordinate and support delivery of P challenge through 2021–22, assist with generation of related extension materials, provide technical support for northern activities and assist to maintain momentum in delivery of P campaign to industry stakeholders.
4. Assist with development of extension materials and provide technical support for activities directly related to delivery of program objectives and review and provide feedback on research reports submitted to MLA.
5. Provide technical input in revision of current EDGE packages, water medication manual and generation of new to assist in ensuring consistent messaging across the various extension and educational material being recommended by MLA, draft extension material such as tips and tools as directed, contributes to development of e-learning modules.

Benefits to industry

The consultant provided editorial and technical review of MLA publications and supported RD&A activities for grassfed beef productivity and animal health and wellbeing.

MLA has continued to update and review publications on an as needed basis.
