Summary
The goal of this project is to develop algorithms to determine daily feed allocation for feedlot cattle. Up to the time-point of this project, this has been a manual process in the feedlot industry. Bunk management algorithms developed in this project will be able to be integrated in semi-autonomous and fully autonomous systems containing the MLA Lidar Bunk Scanner developed in B.FLT.0166.
Objectives
1. Develop a prototype automatic bunk management allocation software system.
2. Determine the precision and accuracy of two algorithms for allocating finisher ration in a simulated environment, targeting ideal bunk scores (feed remaining over head count) before the next feed delivery.
3. Determine the precision and accuracy of two algorithms for allocating finisher ration in an operational environment, targeting ideal bunk scores (feed remaining over head count) before the next feed delivery.
Benefits to industry
Automation of bunk management and bunk calls can optimise carcase gains whilst also reducing feed wastage. Bunk management is a critical activity at a feedlot and currently, remaining feed estimations are calculated manually. The automation of this process can lead to more precise and accurate calculations across large feedlots in short time periods.
Future research
There is potential for future research to develop software that can be easily customised to different customers and the algorithms their feedlots use.
