Summary

The Heat Stress Risk Assessment (HSRA) model was developed to calculate the probability of heat stress on a livestock sea voyage, based on climate data, animal physiology and vessel characteristics.

It has been used over the years for certain types of voyages to modify the number of livestock in each planned shipment to maximise animal welfare outcomes.

To provide an optimal user experience, and to ensure that the software can be updated regularly and easily, it has been transitioned to an online platform with the same underlying master data and model as the previous software.
This project was managed by the Livestock Export RD&E Program, a collaboration between LiveCorp and Meat & Livestock Australia.

Objectives

• Update the HSRA software with a focus on user experience
• Create efficiencies with an upgrade of the database to allow future weather data updates, route map visualisation and connection with other industry data collection systems.
• Future-proof the application and allow timely appropriate updates
• Improve the ease of administration of the platform.

Benefits to industry

Transitioning to HSRA Online reduces the regulatory burden for exporters by ensuring that the platform remains efficient and user-friendly.

It also provides a foundation that allows the software to be updated as required to ensure that its calculations and baseline data remain accurate and up to date.
