Summary

AUSTREX are aware of unique risks posed during Eid al-Fitr and Eid-al-Adha festival and have in place a management plans to mitigate this risk. In 2022, Eid al-Fitr will occur around 3rd of May and Eid al-Adha will occur around 9th to 13th July, depending on the moon. Eid al-Fitr and Eid-al-Adha risk management systems consider regions, new facilities, infrequently used boxes & depots.

The 2022 Risk assessment considers the following:
• Regions in Northern Sumatra & West Java identified as higher risk by LEP in 2021.
• Infrequently used abattoirs (peak season facilities)
• Government abattoirs
• Abattoirs that significantly increase throughput during festival periods
• Abattoirs previously involved in non-compliance
• Non-stun facilities
• Depots

AUSTREX take into consideration and actively assist in the pre-Eid activities & risk assessments of the LEP. AUSTREX works closely with in-market industry stakeholders such as the Forum AWO & LEP to ensure risk is mitigated during Eid al-Fitr and Eid-al-Adha.

Objectives

To mitigate risk during Eid, AUSTREX conduct several different types of site visits physically & remotely (due to COVID restrictions) across the ESCAS platform, to ensure strong oversight over the supply chain in the lead up to Eid al-Adha.

Key findings

Monitoring local depots, animal markets, abattoirs, as well as Mosques, and local Government offices during the peak season days leading to Eid al-Fitr.
Visits were conducted under this activity between 21 March – 3 May 2022, the regions covered were (see figure 1): • Medan • Lampung • North Sumatera • South Sumatera • Bandung • Banten • Jakarta.

AUSTREX conducted and assisted with eight ESCAS trainings (see the map of locations below) with abattoirs, depots, and importer staff, to ensure staff in the supply chain understand the requirements under ESCAS. These trainings occurred as formal & informal training sessions, as part of the AUSTREX Eid Supply Chain Management Plan.

The main focus areas of training were:
• animal welfare & livestock handling
• control during festival periods, and
• requirements under ESCAS.
