Summary
Exporters have requested LEP financial and coordination support to address in-market infrastructure upgrades in Indonesia.
More broadly, the project will undertake a review of Mark IV non-stun boxes. This review would cover restraining devices and where appropriate, invest in the upgrade of the facility to stunning, including the capital cost of stunning infrastructure and hand-held stunning devices.
The project will enable industry to deliver upgrades to some (not all) of Indonesia’s non-stun facilities and increase stunning rates. The target is to upgrade Mark IV non-stun facilities, enabling them to adopt stunning methods in the exporter’s supply chain, hence increasing the animal welfare standard through stunning.
Objectives
The objective of the project is: To increase the stunning rate of cattle in Indonesia by reviewing Mark IV infrastructure and upgrading non-stun abattoirs to stun, to reduce supply chain risk associated with non-stun slaughter.
Key findings
AM Farm abattoir has been upgraded into a stunning facility. The premises passed both ESCAS and Halal audit.
Benefits to industry
Increase the number of facilities using stunning, hence improving animal welfare practices in ESCAS supply chain.
