V.ISC.2108 - ISC PIC Database Enhancements

ISC seek industry input to develop and improve red meat industry integrity.

Project start date: 18 May 2021
Project end date: 26 June 2022
Publication date: 31 January 2024
Project status: Completed
Livestock species: Grain-fed Cattle, Grass-fed Cattle, Sheep, Goat, Lamb
Relevant regions: National

Summary

The aim of this project was to:
• Identify PIC data required by ISC/MLA programs to support ISC and MLA strategic plan outcomes and align this project with the requirements for the Department of Agriculture’s National PIC review and provide recommendations.
• Identify a secure API to enable integrations with ISC, MLA Group and third-party systems.
• Enrich the base spatially enabled ISC PIC database by linking to other foundational datasets (soils, climate etc).

Objectives

This project aimed to deliver the following:
• Develop data ingestion (ETL) pipelines to govern, collect and merge the expanded PIC data from the various State Jurisdiction source systems (not limited to current PIC systems).
• Deliver a high-quality PIC database that includes spatial data of farm gates.
• A data schema optimised for use that addresses current shortcomings, risks and operational challenges.
• Provide a continuously updated dataset provided by the state Jurisdictions and other data set providers stored within the existing MLA Industry Data Platform.

Key findings

There is a conservative approach to data release, driven by ISC obligations as custodians of industry data and stakeholder (producer) expectations associated with the sensitivities of animal movement and related business activities. Data release beyond ISC involves a complex process, driven by stakeholder groups and ISC policy.

Benefits to industry

This project identified the need for internal systems to be developed to allow for data sharing with stakeholders for the purpose of improving systems and processes.

MLA action

To support ISC is gaining input from PICs to further improve the red meat industry.

Future research

Future areas for development possibly include willing and automated workflow process for data sharing between the states and ISC and a review of current information/data that each state department hold to ideally remedy gaps identified in the data.
