Summary

The objective of the Profitable Grazing Systems (PGS) program has been to encourage and support red meat producers to improve their management skills, to increase profit. The vision and purpose of PGS was to develop a financially sustainable adoption program aligned to the
MLA 2020 targets that extends MLA R&D outputs and achieves increased producer skills and capability, practice change and whole farm business improvement.

Objectives

The engagement of a deliverer leadership team was intended to:
- address this deliverer capacity issue by championing the program,
- work closely with the MLA Project Manager to support and mentor the deliverer network,
- develop or deliver feeder activities,
- deliver supported learning programs.

Key findings

The PGS project has only partially met participation and engagement targets. The engagement of the PGS Leadership Team delivered on:
- championing the program
- working with the MLA Project Manager to make program improvements
- mentoring potential deliverers
- engaging with potential participants
- development of off-the-shelf programs
- development and delivery of feeder activities.

Benefits to industry

Profitable Grazing Systems impact that participating producers, on average receive a return of $17.47/ha due to the adoption of management practices.

MLA action

MLA continues to deliver the Profitable Grazing Systems (PGS) program, supporting participants to have the opportunity to develop and practice skills with small groups of like-minded producers to improve business performance.
