From July 2021, Meat & Livestock Australia will receive data provided by levy collection agents to the government, on the individuals and organisations who pay red meat specific transaction levies.

Summary

​​The Levy Payer Register is a database of the details of individuals and organisations who pay red meat industry-specific transaction levies and has been created to allow Research and Development Corporations to better understand and more effectively communicate and collaborate with levy payers to help deliver the functions and services for which they were established.  From 1 July 2021, Meat and Livestock Australia’s (MLA) cattle and livestock Levy Payer Register will commence.

Objectives

Once established, an RDC can use the levy payer information from their register for the following purposes:
to maintain a register of who has paid a levy and/or charge.
to maintain a register of persons eligible to vote in a poll conducted by, or on behalf of, the RDC.
to make public information of a statistical nature.
in performing its functions under a law of the Commonwealth or under a contract or other agreement with the Commonwealth.
to determine whether a person is or remains eligible to be a member of the RDC.

Key findings

Working with industry including levy collection agents, From 1 July 2021, Meat and Livestock Australia’s (MLA) cattle and livestock Levy Payer Register will commence. The outcome of this is that members will not need to self-report on levy transactions to determine voting entitlements at the MLA AGM.

MLA will be able to better understand and more effectively communicate and collaborate with levy payers to help deliver the functions and services for which they were established

MLA action

MLA will use the levy payer register moving forward to determine the voting entitlements of members.
