W.LIV.2022 - HSRA Upgrade

Under regulation, the use of an industry software program – HotStuff or the Heat Stress Risk Assessment (HSRA) model – is mandated for live export voyages in certain circumstances.

Project start date: 21 December 2020
Project end date: 29 December 2021

Project status: Completed
Livestock species: Grain-fed Cattle, Grass-fed Cattle, Sheep, Goat, Lamb
Relevant regions: International

Summary

The current HSRA model was last updated several years ago and the IT/software approach has become outdated. Whilst the underlying thermodynamic principles incorporated into the HSRA have not changed, the usability of the software has become dated. The current model is desktop based (i.e. software must be individually installed by users on their computer), does not have data capture capabilities, requires improvements to the user experience and is largely reliant on third party administrative support.

Objectives

To undertake an update and refresh of the online application of the HSRA model that aids and improves user and administrator experience, data validation at input, captures and stores data within LiveCorp’s data framework, and is constructed in a way that enables updating and integration of new features and connections with reasonable flexibility.

Key findings

This project has now documented materials of sufficient detail to allow a third-party software developer to seamlessly take over development and maintenance as required.

Benefits to industry

An application of the HSRA model now resides within LiveCorp’s hosted environment and has documented materials of sufficient detail to allow a third-party software developer to seamlessly take over development and maintenance as required. This has now transitioned the HSRA software away from the reliance of original developer.

MLA action

For the LEP R&D Program to ensure that currency of the software is maintained.

Future research

To ensure currency is maintained and the environmental input data is updated every five years.
