Summary

The South Australian Livestock Consultants (SALC) Livestock Advisor Updates (LAU) are annual one day awareness events targeted at livestock advisors. This project provided sponsorship support for one event per annum, between 2019 and 2021. The events were to be used to upskill public and private sector advisors and leading producers from South Australia and Victoria with the latest technology, information and tools from MLA.

SALC are a group of independent consultants who provide services to the livestock industry across South Australia and interstate. The group formed in 2010 to improve consulting services and build the capacity of the broadacre livestock industry. SALC member details can be found at www.salivestockconsultants.com.au

Objectives

The SALC LAU events were run as a tool for adoption of research, providing a forum for advisors to upskill and in turn upskill producers. Events were designed to convey the most up to date knowledge to livestock advisors and help them support producers to make better management decisions resulting in more productive, profitable and sustainable farm businesses.
The LAU events could also be used as a tool for researchers to receive feedback on their research and the relevancy of that research to increasing productivity, profitability and sustainability on farm.

Key findings

Between 2019 and 2021, MLA sponsored SALC Livestock Advisor Update events had a total of 306 attendees, with an 80% satisfaction rate, and a 63.5% increase in confidence. This resulted in 84% of attendees saying they would recommend the event to other livestock advisors.

Benefits to industry

Through upskilling livestock advisors, producers are able to gain the best possible advice to improve the productivity, profitability and sustainability of their enterprise. Upskilling the 306 attendees in turn upskills between approximately 6000-15000 producers (with an industry average multiplier of 20-50 producers influenced per advisor).

MLA action

MLA to investigate further opportunities to upskill livestock advisors across the country.

Future research

Further investment in upskilling livestock advisors should be sought to ensure this key demographic is supported to extend research outcomes and ensure adoption of best practice management on-farm.
