Summary
The co-funding program combines producer levies with commercial exporter funds to deliver activities in-market to sustain the livestock export trade. The majority of co-funded projects are related to welfare assurance training and support.
Objectives
To partner with Australian exporters to deliver welfare and trade improvements in Australia's livestock export markets.
Key findings
Improvements have been made in overseas markets to support live export trade sustainability. These are primarily in the area of welfare assurance and risk mitigation - upskilling livestock handlers and people involved in processing of Australian livestock.
Benefits to industry
Improvements in overseas markets support trade sustainability. Many of the co-funding projects involve welfare assurance and are delivered in overseas feedlots and abattoirs that are feeding and processing Australian livestock. Training activities are an important element in many co-funding projects - best practice handling and processing of Australian livestock. Solid welfare performance contributes to sustaining the trade which is particularly important to WA sheep producers and northern cattle producers.
MLA action
Continue to review and improve the LEP's co-funding program.
Future research
Co-funding support is ongoing and is focused on delivery of in-market outcomes in livestock export destinations.
