Summary

The goal of sound breeder management is to maximise the average weight of weaner produced per breeder cow mated and retained in the herd at the start of the breeding season. To achieve this management goal, there is a requirement to; maximise conception rates, maintain pregnancy, calve at the ideal time relative to nutritional availability and ambient weather conditions; ensure heifers get back in calf while rearing their first calf successfully and to maximise the lifetime productivity of the mature breeder.

This work reported current literature and examined the scientific capacity in Australia and overseas, to identify and investigate factors influencing breeder management. It also explored current scientific and commercial capacity to leverage an understanding of factors affecting breeder management by developing management tools and strategies for maximising breeder output in all regions of Australia. A non-exclusive list of potential Australian and international research talent in beef cattle reproduction and allied disciplines was compiled.
