Summary
The objective of the Exporter Supply Chain Assurance System (ESCAS) is to ensure that animal welfare in international markets is in line with international welfare standards. However, the implementation of this strict supply chain with multiple checks and balances has also had a positive influence on the quality, safety and hygiene of the meat products that importers and processors deliver to these export markets which are passed on to their consumers. This project has developed factsheets that highlight the benefits of implementing the ESCAS system on meat quality, safety and hygiene using information in literature and data coming from current research projects. The economic benefits of implementing ESCAS have also been highlighted in simple economic analyses.
