Summary

There is an increasing need to underpin growing live cattle exports with support and extension materials, to ensure that those responsible for their health and welfare understand their responsibilities and are appropriately equipped to prevent and address challenges, should they occur. Major markets for beef breeding livestock include Russia and the former states of the Soviet Union.
Many cattle exported from Australia, particularly breeding cattle, are ultimately farmed in regional areas of destination countries. They are often managed by farmers with a range of expertise in animal husbandry. Opportunities exist to build their knowledge base and to provide advice that will result in improved welfare and productivity. Support and extension materials are needed to ensure the custodians of these cattle have an understanding of the core principles of sound animal husbandry. As beef breeder markets continue to expand, there is a need to complement exports of these cattle with highly relevant and customised support materials.
The Beef Breeding Manual is an addition to industry's suite of resources that contributes to improved animal welfare outcomes in its overseas markets. It will also add to the efficiency and productivity of Australia's beef breeder customers.
