Summary
Genetic progress in the Australian sheepmeat industry is underpinned by selection of and breeding from rams with Australian Sheep Breeding Values (ASBVs), however the cost of using ASBVs is not passed on to commercial and seedstock producers. Ram breeders spend significant amounts of money each year on improving their genetics, through purchasing superior rams or employing the latest breeding technologies (artificial insemination (AI), embryo transfer (ET), or juvenile invitro embryo transfer (JIVET).
