Summary

Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) commissioned a desk study by van Gelder (2012) that provided an indication of India's policy and production intentions with regard to Indian buffalo. After consideration of that study, MLA developed a terms of reference to be addressed through more detailed market research to provide clear conclusions about questions such as what will the impact on Australian markets be? and will India be able to maintain its recent growth?
Specifically, the following objectives/terms of reference and project outputs aim to answer these questions in the context of the next five years.
The extent to which Indian government policies, finance, and technical support will impact the Indian carabeef industry in the next five years?
How will the Government of India's (GOI) genetic improvement projects for cattle and buffalo affect India's production capacity in the next five years?
India's utilisation capacity for processing, including the level of sophistication of Indian processing and food safety in the next five years?
Indian carabeef animal health connotations and potential development in this area in the next five years, including India's ability to meet international minimum animal welfare standards?
How India's domestic requirements (domestic consumption) for carabeef will affect India's export capacity (include analysis for meat and live exports) in the next five years?
What level of market access does India currently have in international markets and how is this likely to expand in the next five years?
Identify India's major markets for carabeef, (including cut analysis) in the next five years, and particularly their ability to compete in Asian markets at all levels?
India's ability to have access to grain or other animal feedstuffs to support an increased amount of higher quality carabeef on the world market in the next five years?
The ability of higher quality carabeef from India to compete with high quality beef in the international foodservice industry?
Potential pricing trends in India (domestic and export prices) in the next five years?
