Summary
This manual briefly describes how to use Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to protect animal welfare during long distance land transport. Long distance transport in Indonesia is generally defined as journeys that cannot be completed within 48 hours. It provides an overview of the transport process and lists the desired animal welfare outcomes.
The requirements of the World Animal Health Organisation (OIE) standard are covered in this chapter and throughout the individual SOPs. It comprises an introduction and four standard operating procedures relating to management of Australian cattle during long distance transport. This SOP can be used when transporting cattle any distance, however it also contains additional requirements for rest stop facilities and the provision of food and water, when the total journey is of a duration which results in animals being off water for 48 hours.
