This project undertook a review of lamb finishing options and compared the profitability of sytems including: traditional breeder-finisher pasture/fodder crop finishing; specialist pasture/fodder crop finishing (lambs bought in); opportunistic grain based finishing; specialist grain based finishing. The project summarised the key business and management elements that are characteristic of profitable lamb finishing enterprises.
This included a sensitivity analysis of the interaction between the key profit drivers and management practices; and an analysis of the sensitivity of enterprise profitability to variability in input costs, season and prices received. A second project was initiated to enhance the findings of this proejct further investigating the live-weight and reproduction ranges across ewe types. The findings from this project and the follow one project are published in the report B.LSM.0030 Prime lamb finishing options.
