Summary

Japanese consumers’ attitude towards food prices including beef
A survey of 2,000 Japanese consumers was conducted by Japan's Nikkei Research in conjunction with moves by the Japanese and Australian Government's to secure a closer economic and trade partnership.
The research was initiated in order to: 1. better understand Japanese consumer's attitudes/sentiments towards food prices; and 2. to understand Japanese consumer's attitudes/sentiment towards beef import tariffs and the potential impact a trade reforming economic partnership agreement would have on those tariffs and hence imported beef prices.
Via the survey responses, it was apparent that Japanese consumers were supportive of a reduction in beef import tariffs, and this message was utilised for trade reform advocacy / market access improvement purposes.
The results were incorporated in a publication, produced by the Australian Embassy in Tokyo, to assist positioning Australian agriculture in Japan (and specifically beef) for potential trade reform via the Japan-Australia Economic Partnership Agreement negotiations.
