Summary

Three projects were funded from 2005-2007 relating to the appointment of a National Goat Industry Development Officer with the goal of implementing the objectives of the 2003/04 - 2005/06 Goat Industry Strategic Plan (GISP).
The four main goals of the 2003/04 - 2005/06 GISP were as follows: 

​1. Increase the supply of goats for slaughter, improve on-farm productivity and reduce costs of production.

2. Contribute significantly to natural resource management outcomes from agriculture.

3. Exploit all potential markets for goat meat and co-products and deliver a safe and wholesome product which meets customer specifications.

4. Enable learning and adoption of innovation and technology throughout the supply chain.


The project objectives included: 

1. Raise the awareness and profile of the goat industry maintaining an overview of all MLA goat industry related initiatives, and be responsible for implementation of the goat on-farm R&D program comprising:

​- oversee the production of a goat best practice manual (project management)

- promote the goat industry to new and existing producers

- the development and initial delivery of a communication and extension program

​2. Coordinate the development of the 2006-2011 goat industry strategic plan and 2006/07 operational plan consistent with broader MLA plans and incorporating the on-farm R&D extension and communication plan which includes:

​- key extension activities

- program materials including a portfolio of presentations and short workshops templates for nominated target audiences, potential events and event partners 

- budgets for all activities

​3. Develop an operational plan in consultation with Goat Industry Council of Australia (GICA)   to formalize on-going GICA/MLA liaison, including the management of GICA R&D subcommittee.

4. Assist Goat Industry Council of Australia Research & Development (GICARD) to report to GICA on a twice yearly basis.

5. Lead the recruitment and establishment of a full-time goat industry development officer.
