Summary

Background

Between 1998 and 2007, MLA funded a series of projects for deboning ovine carcases with a New Zealand company (MACPRO) as well as several processors.

Research

MACPRO designed and build a series of semi automated modules to cover the following tasks.

Sheep Hindquarter Boning Leg Boning Module (project M.731 in 1998)
Redesign of the ovine leg/shoulder deboning machine (project PSHIP.099 in 2002)
Development of an ovine spine removal machine (project PSHIP.0100 in 2002)
Preliminary development of a deboning machine for beef hind-legs (project PSHIP.105 in 2002)
Ovine Shoulder Removal System - Further Refinement at two sites (project P.PIP.0110 in 2004 to 2007)
Outcomes

While there was some limited takeup of the above technologies, these have been superceded by more advanced semi or fully automated systems from our service providers. However, some of the original MACPRO concepts have been incorporated into more recent technology designs being developed by MACPRO.
