Thursday daily sheep summary

This week at CTLX Carcoar, lamb yardings lifted 38%, to 8,500 head. Quality throughout the offering varied, with an increase in supply of store weight lambs suitable for restockers. The usual domestic and export buyers operated eagerly, resulting in a much dearer market week-on week.

Mutton throughput increased by 24%, to 5,500 head. Overall quality was good, with heavy weight first-cross lines particularly well supplied.

  • Trade weight 3 score old lambs to processors gained 64¢, averaging 686¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy weight score 4 old lambs to slaughter averaged 691¢, up 65¢/kg cwt
  • Medium weight 3 score Merino ewes jumped 43¢, averaging 420¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy weight 4 score First-cross ewes averaged 414¢, jumping 1¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy weight 4 score Merino wethers were up 21¢, to 440¢/kg cwt

Lamb consignments increased 26% this week, to 14,235 head. Quality varied across the offering, with light and store weight lambs attracting additional restocker interest from Northern and South Australian buyers in particular. Processors also operated strongly throughout heavier lines, with the market trending notably dearer overall.

  • Light weight 2 score old lambs to restockers reached 850¢, lifting 31¢, to  788¢/kg cwt
  • Trade weight 3 score old lambs to slaughter increased 70¢, averaging 692¢/kg cwt
  • Extra heavy weight 3 score old lambs averaged 674¢, up 51¢/kg cwt

At the close of Wednesday’s markets:

  • The eastern states restocker lamb indicator averaged 730¢, increasing 57¢/kg cwt from the previous day
  • Merino lambs averaged 590¢, back 1¢/kg cwt
  • Light lambs averaged 631¢, up 8¢/kg cwt
  • Trade lambs averaged 654¢, jumping 18¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy lambs improved 10¢, averaging 663¢/kg cwt
  • The mutton indicator finished 1¢ higher, at 430¢/kg cwt
