Thursday daily sheep summary

This week at CTLX Carcoar, lamb numbers lifted 20% on the week prior – to 8,500 head. Quality throughout the offering slipped on the previous sale, however a fair selection of trade weight drafts were on offer. Lighter weights to suit processors held mostly firm, while the majority of the yarding presented in store condition.

Sheep throughput declined 11%, to 4,400 head. A mostly plainer yarding of mutton was on offer this week, with only the odd well finished pen seen throughout.

  • Trade weight 3 score Old lambs to processors gained 11¢, averaging 618¢/kg cwt
  • Trade weight 3 score Young lambs to slaughter were up 17¢, averaging 640¢/kg cwt
  • Medium weight 3 score first-cross ewes reached 486¢, averaging 395¢/kg cwt

Lamb consignments at Hamilton over doubled this week, to 19,555 head. Quality was again notably mixed, with condition varying from light to very good across most sections. The usual buying group attended, with strong restocker activity coming from South Australian agents in particular – resulting in a dearer trend in places.

  • Light weight 2 score Young lambs to restockers gained 16¢, to 719¢/kg cwt
  • Light weight 2 score Old lambs to restockers jumped 27¢, to 682¢/kg cwt
  • Trade weight 3 score Old lambs to processors were up 21¢, to 651¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy weight 3 score Old lambs to slaughter slipped 10¢, to 643¢/kg cwt

At the close of Wednesday’s markets:

  • The eastern states restocker lamb indicator averaged 697¢, increasing 31¢/kg cwt on where it finished the previous day  
  • Merino lambs averaged 590¢, up 3¢/kg cwt
  • Light lambs averaged 628¢, up 4¢/kg cwt
  • Trade lambs averaged 644¢, up 7¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy lambs averaged 659¢, up 2¢/kg cwt
  • The mutton indicator finished 2¢ higher, at 412¢/kg cwt
