Wednesday daily sheep summary

Lamb consignments at Ballarat were back 23% week-on-week, to 4,792 head, in a very mixed quality yarding. Most of the regular buyers were present but not all operated, with buyers more selective with their purchases. Restockers were active.

Sheep throughput increased 26%, to 3,287 head, and it was an average quality offering, with all weights and grades represented. Most lines sold to a slightly dearer trend.

  • Light weight first cross 2 score old lambs were down 63¢, on 487¢/kg cwt
  • Trade weight 3 score old lambs fell 56¢, on 597¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy weight 3 score old lambs declined 46¢ on 589¢/kg cwt
  • Medium weight first cross 2 score ewes eased 2¢, on 361¢/kg cwt

Lamb yardings at Forbes lifted 31%, to 28,100 head, and quality varied from plainer types to well-finished lines, with young lambs accounting for around one third of the offering. Not all the regular buyers attended and the market trended cheaper overall.

Sheep consignments were down 16%, to 5,870 head, consisting largely of Merinos. Prices were again quite strong.

  • Trade weight 3 score young lambs were back 61¢, on 616¢/kg cwt
  • Light weight 3 score old lambs slipped 59¢, on 583¢/kg cwt
  • Trade weight 3 score old lambs declined 75¢ on 568¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy weight 4 score old lambs lost 48¢, on 591¢/kg cwt
  • Extra heavy weight 4 score old lambs were 32¢ lower, on 602¢/kg cwt
  • Medium weight 3 score Merino ewes were down 29¢ on 396¢/kg cwt

At the close of Tuesday’s markets:

  • The eastern states restocker lamb indicator lifted 13¢ on 605¢/kg cwt
  • Merino lambs were back 13¢ on 530¢/kg cwt
  • Light lambs declined 11¢ on 554¢/kg cwt
  • Trade lambs slipped 10¢ on 609¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy lambs were 8¢ lower on 616¢/kg cwt
  • The mutton indicator was down 5¢ on 387¢/kg cwt
