Wednesday daily sheep summary

Lamb consignments to Forbes doubled on last week to 33,490 head and consisted of 18,400 new season lambs. There were some good runs of well finished lambs available along with the drier plainer types and a good selection of lighter store type lambs. The usual buyers were present and competing along with restockers in a cheaper market.

Mutton numbers also doubled to 10,100 head and consisted of mostly Merinos.

• New season light weight 2 score restocker lambs fell 69¢, to average 589¢/kg cwt
• New season trade weight 4 score lambs eased 41¢ on 603¢/kg cwt
• Old trade weight 3 score lambs decreased 30¢ to 563¢/kg cwt
• Medium weight 3 score Merino ewes eased 14¢ and averaged 398¢/kg cwt

Numbers at Ballarat were close to double of the previous week, with 26,359 lambs yarded. Quality range from average to good however not all the usual buyers operated.

Sheep numbers also doubled to 6,375 head. Heavier Merinos sold at similar levels to last week while crossbred and lighter Merinos eased.

• New season trade weight 3 score lambs to restockers dropped 35¢ to 571¢/kg cwt
• New season trade weight 3 score lambs were back 40¢ on 576¢/kg cwt
• New season heavy weight 4 score lambs eased 49¢ to 549¢/kg cwt
• Heavy weight 4 score first cross ewes averaged 10¢ cheaper, on 363¢/kg cwt

At the close of Tuesday’s markets:

• The eastern states restocker lamb indicator averaged 9¢ lower on 604¢/kg cwt
• Merino lambs were up 1¢ on 528¢/kg cwt
• Light lambs averaged 579¢, back 17¢/kg cwt
• Trade lambs settled 12¢ lower on 578¢/kg cwt
• Heavy lambs were back 11¢ on 570¢/kg cwt
• The mutton indicator slipped 17¢ and averaged 405¢/kg cwt
