Wednesday daily sheep summary

Lamb consignments at Forbes declined 34% this week, to 19,550 head. Quality across most categories held firm, with both well finished and plainer lambs in good supply. The usual buyers were present and competed in a firm to dearer market overall.

Mutton numbers decreased 30%, to 2,800 head. Quality was again mixed, with Merinos making up the bulk of the offering and prices lifting in sections.  

  • Trade weight 4 score old lambs to slaughter gained 12¢, at 611¢/kg cwt  
  • Heavy weight 4 score old lambs averaged 612¢, up 1¢/kg cwt
  • Extra heavy weight 4 score old lambs averaged 602¢, down 3¢/kg cwt
  • Medium weight  3 score Merino ewes eased 12¢, to 404¢/kg cwt

Lamb throughput at Ballarat declined 7%, to 19,968 head. The usual buying group attended, with quality average to good across the penning. There were a few pens of well-conditioned heavy lambs on offer.

Mutton numbers declined 13%, to 4,705 head. Quality was mixed, with most on offer selling to keen demand to the regular buyers that attended.

  • Light weight 2 score old lambs to slaughter averaged 564¢, back 32¢/kg cwt
  • Trade weight 3 score old lambs gained 18¢, averaging 625¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy weight 4 score old lambs to slaughter were up 17¢, to 629¢/kg cwt
  • Extra heavy weight 4 score old lambs dropped 4¢, to 598¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy weight 3 score first-cross ewes gained 2¢, averaging 347¢/kg cwt  

At the close of Tuesday’s markets:

  • The eastern states restocker lamb indicator was back 1¢ on where it finished the previous day, on 630¢/kg cwt
  • Merino lambs were back 3¢, on 562¢/kg cwt
  • Light lambs were up 2¢, to 591¢/kg cwt
  • Trade lambs were up 4¢, to 599¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy lambs were up 1¢, on 603¢/kg cwt
  • The mutton indicator held firm, on 392¢/kg cwt
